Global Supply Chain Update – December 4, 2024

Global Container Rates

  • The composite rate per 40-foot container was $3,331 on 11/28/24, which is down $82 from the previous week. Global container rates were mostly declined week-over-week. The largest decrease was from Shanghai to Los Angeles, which decreased $238 to $4,250. The second largest decrease was from Shanghai to Rotterdam, which decreased $74 to $3,997. 

Suez Canal Crossings 

  • The chart below outlines the 7-day rolling total of container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers traveling South to North through the Suez Canal.
  • The total number of crossings on 12/02/24 was 84 (compared to 212 on 12/01/23), which is a 60.38% decrease year-over-year.

Most-Watched Supply Chain Metrics  

  • The chart below is a breakdown of supply chain metrics for November 2024.

  • The aggregate index of most-watched supply chain metrics (the black line in the chart below) increased last week to -0.21 from -0.42, with zero meaning the supply chain is acting normally.

U.S. Trucking Rates

  • Trucking rates decreased week-over-week, with Internet Truckstop’s average equipment rate at $2.24 per mile.
  • Trucking rates on a geographical basis mostly decreased week-over-week. The biggest decrease was in the West Coast, which decreased $0.05 to $2.26 per mile. The next biggest decrease was in the Southeast, which decreased $0.02 to $2.21 per mile.
