Global Supply Chain Update – February 5, 2025

Global Container Rates

  • The composite rate per 40-foot container was $3,364 on 1/30/25, which is down $81 from 1/23/25. Global container rates mostly decreased from 1/23/25. The largest decrease was from Shanghai to Genoa, which decreased $162 to $4,400. The second largest decrease was from Shanghai to Rotterdam, which decreased $160 to $3,274.

Panama Canal Crossings

  • The chart below outlines the 7-day rolling total of container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers traveling through the Panama Canal.
  • The total number of crossings on 2/03/25 was 94 (compared to 59 on 2/05/24).

Suez Canal Crossings

Red Sea:  The Suez Canal Authority has projected stability in the coming weeks to the Red Sea after the Israel-Hamas Ceasefire. 

  • The chart below outlines the 7-day rolling total of container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers traveling South to North through the Suez Canal.
  • The total number of crossings on 2/03/25 was 88 (compared to 94 on 2/05/24).

Most-Watched Supply Chain Metrics  

  • The chart below is a breakdown of supply chain metrics for January 2025.

  • The aggregate index of most-watched supply chain metrics (the black line in the chart below) decreased last week to -0.11 from -0.03, with zero meaning the supply chain is acting normally.

U.S. Trucking Rates

  • Trucking rates decreased week-over-week, with Internet Truckstop’s average equipment rate at $2.28 per mile.
  • Trucking rates on a geographical basis mostly decreased week-over-week. The biggest decreases was in the Midwest, Mountain Central and South Central, which all decreased $0.02 to $2.46, $2.07, and $2.27 per mile. The next biggest decrease was in the Northeast, which decreased $0.01 to $2.08, respectively.
