Regional Banks Back in the Spotlight

  • New York Community Bank (NYCB) shares have declined approximately 70% in 2024, to $2.85 on 3/5/24. The following chart outlines NYCB stock performance and the KBW Regional Banking Index.

  • The KBW Bank Index and the KBW Regional Banking Index are outlined in the chart below. The KBW Bank Index exceeded the KBW Regional Banking Index for the first time on 3/4/24 for the period shown below (1/1/23 – 3/5/24). On  3/5/24, the KBW Bank Index was at 98.13 and the KBW Regional Banking Index was at 96.75.

  • The Five Year Percent Returns for the KBW Regional Bank Index vs the S&P 500 is shown in the chart below. The S&P 500 was up 82.40% on 3/5/24, while the KBW Regional Banking Index was down at -6.72%.

  • The Delinquency Rate on Consumer Loans from Q1 1987 to Q4 2023 is shown in the chart below. Small Banks (assets less than $1.3 billion) had the largest Delinquency Rate at 3.18% in Q4 2023, followed by All Commercial Banks at 2.78%, and Large Banks (assets of $100 billion or more) at 2.74%. 

  • The chart below outlines Total Deposits by Bank Size from 1/1/20 to 2/21/24. In recent weeks, both bank sizes have seen a slowdown in total deposits. Small Chartered Banks were at 38.93% on 2/21/24 and Large Chartered Banks were at 30.27% on 2/21/24.
